Workshops 5
Friday 12 July, 2:00pm - 3:30pm
5.1 The Neuroscience of Self-Care
This workshop will unpack the neuroscience of Self-Care. This is essential information for anyone who feels that their job or home life activates their stress response maybe a little too often!! We will talk about what actually happens for us when we get stressed. This workshop will explain the activations that occur in our brain and our body. When we enter stress, a phenomenal level of activation occurs that alters the function of our physiological systems, as well as our neurological systems. This means our body changes and so does our brain. When we go into stress, our ability to think and focus is affected. We can become tired, sick, more prone to infections. This can all be due to experiencing stress. Sleep is one thing that can be severely affected, so we will unpack more around sleep and the reasons for it. This session will help you understand why some days can be exhausting, and offer some helpful tips on how to help manage (but also, how to accept it at times) This workshop is packed full of fascinating information for Self-Care, but also for ensuring we can help our family members and colleagues stay well.
Kathryn Berkett, Engage Training
The training will be carried out by Kathryn Berkett of ENGAGE. Kathryn has her Masters in Educational Psychology, and has certified as a Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics practitioner with Dr Perry. Kathryn has extensive experience in this area. She has worked and trained in this area for over sixteen years, delivering to a variety of organisations including Primary and Secondary Teachers; the Police; Oranga Tamariki; Prisons; Kindergartens; Parents; Recreation Groups; Mental Health Professionals; IRD; Politicians; and Corporates in New Zealand, Australia and the UK.

5.3 Taking the lead: Creating rainbow inclusive schools
Schools have a legal duty to provide a safe environment at school - this is every student's human right. However we know that many rainbow students do not feel safe at school in Aotearoa. It is vital that school leadership and staff understand the issues facing rainbow young people, and learn how they can work towards solutions that promote student wellbeing. InsideOUT will discuss the key challenges young people are facing in their schools, and provide tips and resources to support you in creating rainbow inclusive school environments.
Tabby Besley, InsideOUT
Tabby Besley is the Founder and Managing Director of InsideOUT, a national charity with the vision for all young people of minority sexualities, genders and sex characteristics in Aotearoa New Zealand to have a sense of belonging and safety in their schools and communities.
In 2015 Tabby’s work was recognised internationally, as she became the first New Zealander to receive a Queen’s Young Leader Award, given to young people leading change and transforming lives in their communities. In 2017 Tabby was one of five to receive the Vodafone Foundation’s World of Difference Award, as well as being the Education Finalist for NEXT Woman of the Year and receiving the Wellingtonian of the Year Youth Award.

5.4 Procurement
The emerging role of procurement, from the back room to the front line.
I will talk about how procurement has become entrenched as a key business function regardless of sector, the effect of bad procurement and the impact of good procurement , and how we as a group can leverage this to make a difference.
Tod Cooper, Chartered Institute of Procurement & Supply
Tod is a Commercial and Procurement Consultant. Tod has been involved in commercial and operational leadership and advisory roles for the past 20 years, his past role was as General Manager of MDA Corporation, a world leading Space technology company. Prior to that Tod’s two most recent roles both had a large significant strategic procurement transformation focus. Tod has held senior positions across both public and private sector in both sales, procurement and business leadership and development, cementing himself as a key trusted advisor. It is fair to say Tod has seen the good, the bad, and the ugly from the perspectives of both a procurement practitioner and a supplier.
Tod’s career began in in the mid 90’s with a sales and marketing role within a private defence contractor, a role which would eventually lead to an 8-year diplomatic career including a diplomatic posting with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. Passionate about what a modern procurement function can offer a business in terms of practical and strategic business advice and support. Tod considers himself a procurement “champion”.
